Bill Albert is Executive Director of the User Experience Center and an Adjunct Professor in Human Factors in Information Design at Bentley University. Albert is Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Usability Studies. Albert brings more than 20 years of experience in user experience research and design to his role leading the center and working with clients around the world. His interests are in qualitative and quantitative research techniques, and user experience strategy. Albert co-wrote (with Tom Tullis) Measuring the User Experience.
Jumana Al Hashal
Jay is the Mobile Development Manager of Zillow Inc. She is responsible for core mobile product strategy, design, and development activities. Jay joined the company in 2011 after serving for five years in a Creative Technologist role at Übermind, Inc. (acquired by Deloitte Digital). During her tenure with Übermind, Jay worked for a number high profile clients including Apple, Fox Broadcasting, Allrecipes and Target, developing numerous award-winning mobile solutions. Jay is a Facilitator for Startup Weekend, and is actively involved in mentoring and coaching early-stage startups in Seattle and Amman (Jordan). Jay graduated cum laude from Macalester College with undergraduate degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Studio Art. She received a Masters of Communications in Digital Media degree from the University of Washington..
Claire joined the Blink team in 2011 with a B.S. Degree in Human-Centered Design and Engineering from the University of Washington. During her time at Blink, Claire has focused on designing elegant interfaces, working with clients in real estate, healthcare, sports, and cloud services. She is excited about the future of mobile payments and mobile commerce, especially in relation to near-field communication. Previous to Blink, Claire assisted with research in the Electrical Engineering department at UW.
At Gravity Works Design & Development, Lauren uses words to help people understand, and fall in love with, technology. She has edited encyclopedias, constructed sitemaps, written web copy as well as video game storylines, and trained stakeholders to maintain web content. Lauren recently collaborated on Professional Mobile Application Development (Wrox Press), writing about mobile design and content.
Kate Ertmann is a businesswoman, seasoned speaker, thought leader and a charitable advocate. She is one of the founders Portland’s Women in Animation chapter and is a board member for Bradley Angle, the oldest domestic violence services organization on the west coast. Kate became a partner at ADi in 2000 and became the sole owner in 2008. Her company produces 3D Animation for business, marketing, education and entertainment.
Kelly is primarily focused on Blink’s methodology. He is our most innovative thinker who is always looking for new and creative ways to solve challenges. Prior to starting Blink in 2000, Kelly led user-centered design projects at E-Lab (acquired by Sapient Corporation) Lexant, and Immersant. Kelly has a Bachelor of Science in Design from Arizona State University’s Design School where he studied industrial design and human factors. He also holds a Master of Design degree, specializing in Human-Centered Design, from the Institute of Design in Chicago.
Kelly Goto founded gotomedia to create global digital products and services that are both research-driven and people-friendly. She also pioneered the field of design ethnography to study context across multiple devices. Goto is a frequent speaker on iterative Lean processes and Emotional UX. Her acclaimed book, Workflow that Works, is an industry standard on user experience design. It’s been translated into 22 languages–so far.
Valle is the head of user experience research at Design For Use, a boutique UX consulting firm in Austin. She has a Master’s degree in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Before her switch to Texas and user experience, she worked in the publishing industry in New York City. When she’s not making websites more user-friendly, she’s brewing her own wine, painting, and thinking about skydiving.
Andrew Hinton is an Information Architect at The Understanding Group (aka TUG). Since the early 90s, he’s been helping clients and employers of all shapes and sizes make better information environments. A co-founder and past board member of the IA Institute, Andrew is currently working on a book for O’Reilly on how information shapes our experience of context. Steven Hoober is a mobile strategist, architect, and interaction designer whose 4ourth Mobile helps large companies, mobile service providers and startups understand how to exploit mobile technology to meet the needs of their users, and the goals of their organizations. Steven co-wrote the O’Reilly book Designing Mobile Interfaces, maintains a repository of mobile design and development information at the 4ourth Mobile Patterns Wiki and publishes a regular column on mobile in UX Matters magazine, amongother writing.
Phillip practices and evangelizes experience and interaction design at Microsoft, helping extend its recent re-focus on great experience design. Previously, he has twice engineered the overhaul of UX strategies at previous companies, founded design and user research practices and teams, and designed voice, mobile, and browser applications, tools, and sites. He’s helped usher in changes in how software-enabled experiences are designed, the role of data in design, and the use of agile design methods. He’s worked in consultancies, start-ups, non-profits, and corporations. He’s also an occasional developer, a word crafter, strategic planner, problem finder and solver, systems thinker, product developer, and program manager. He embraces the ambiguous and values principles over rules. Phillip enjoys spending time hiking, training as a pencil artist, blogging, making music, guiding his three teens, and hanging out with his wife.
Curiosita is lead by Diane Jacobsen. Her career has spanned the disciplines of architecture, UX design, and management consulting. She specializes in creating a one-of-a-kind user centered experience that transcends both the physical and digital world. Her rich background in design thinking allows her to integrate her education and experience into clear, executable solutions. Diane’s method and approach is holistic and inclusive within an organization. Her goal is to deliver a creative, human-centric solution that has a lasting impact.
Rob Keefer, PhD, has spent the past ten years focused on leading Agile teams, and along the way always worked to ensure the user’s perspective was valued throughout a product’s development. Rob holds a Masters in Human Factors Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science, and has led the development of highly interactive products with Raytheon, Major League Baseball (mlb.com), FedEx Office, and more.
Michael Mace is mobile strategist at UserTesting.com. A longtime veteran of Silicon Valley, he has co-founded two software startups, worked as an executive at Apple and Palm, and consulted on strategy and product planning to many of the tech industry’s leading firms. At Apple, Michael held a variety of leadership positions including director of Mac platform marketing. He is the author of Map the Future, a book on planning strategy in fast-changing markets.
My formal education is in Electrical Engineering and Psychology. I’ve served as a faculty member at Harvard, University of California, San Diego, Northwestern, and KAIST (South Korea). I’ve also worked in industry as a VP at Apple and an executive at HP and a startup). Today my emphasis is on helping technology companies structure their product lines and business. My major emphasis is design strategy: how designers and design thinking can help drive both incremental and radical innovation within the company.
Len is currently a freelance artist/designer making a living out of Cleveland, Ohio. He started out as a copywriter, then made the transition to graphic design and traditional and digital illustration. In 2010, Len created a multimedia art project called Geek A Week that has since spawned four “seasons” including special branded exclusive sets for Discovery Channel/MythBusters. In his 11+ years of working on his own, he had designed card games, illustrated various books, created original artwork for thousands of people and left a fairly large footprint in the arena of geeky illustration. He also draws the top tech stories of the day on Twit.tv’s Tech News Today every Friday.
Whitney combines a fascination with people and an obsession to communicate clearly with her goal of bringing user research insights to designing products where people matter. She’s written two books on the subject – A Web for Everyone, Storytelling for User Experience, and Global UX – to help practitioners keep users in mind throughout the creative process. She’s also passionate about civic design. Whitney has worked with election officials on usability and design of ballots and other election materials.
Tom came to Blink in 2010 with 10 years of experience researching interaction, learning, and technology use in homes and schools. In 2006 he graduated from the Ph.D. program in Learning Sciences at the University of Washington. After graduation he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Learning and Performance Support Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Currently, he serves as a Part-time Lecturer in the Museology (museum studies) Graduate Program at the University of Washington where he teaches courses on learning and research. His past work includes ethnographic studies of how young people learn to use digital media as well as research on the integration of technology into educational settings. In his spare time Tom enjoys riding Metro buses, living in a pink house, and finding ways to make his daughter laugh. Tom is a member of the Puget Sound SigChi.
Tania Schlatter designs interfaces by combining user-centered and visual design techniques. Equally interested in research, content and form, Tania is dedicated to making technology and information work for people’s hearts and minds. Formal study includes an M. Des. from the Institute of Design in Chicago; a summer with Paul Rand and Armin Hofmann in Brissago, Switzerland; and a BFA in graphic design. Tania teaches interactive information design, is co-author of Visual Usability: Principles and Practices for Designing Digital Applications, and co-owns Nimble Partners, a Boston UX firm. She has been practicing design for more than 20 years.
Oli Shaw is a strategic designer, his past is in global digital advertising for brands such as: Panasonic and Adidas, during the last 6 years he has focused on product and service innovation for clients such as: Nokia, BSkyB, Orange, Tesco, UBS. His approach is highly collaborative and participatory, he plans and facilitates workshops / open design sessions within organisations. He is employed to set up (creative) agile processes for tactical delivery of products, and has built or grown cross discipline teams needed to make this happen. In addition to his professional work he runs workshops and speaks at conferences across Europe on topics ranging from; discovery & recommendation, personalization, serendipity, creativity, brand strategy and rapid innovation techniques.
Catt is a proud gamer and Product Designer at Bedrocket Media Ventures, a media production startup. Before joining Bedrocket, she did design work at at NASDAQ OMX, ParksByNature Network, and Scholastic. She started coding at the age of 12, designing at the age of 15, and graduated from SVA with a BFA in Graphic Design in 2011. In her spare time, Catt writes code and creates pixel art for video games; runs Tech Under Thirty, a meetup for young people in design and technology fields; and draws comics.
Kel Smith is Principal of Anikto LLC and a longtime author, speaker and practitioner in digital accessibility and e-health. His articles have appeared in numerous publications, and his presentation credits span 40 cities in six countries. His client experienceincludes engagements with Novartis, Kestrel-Boeing, Merck, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Aetna, AXIS Healthcare, Comcast and Quest Diagnostics. He is the author of the book Digital Outcasts: Moving Technology Forward Without Leaving People Behind, published by Morgan Kaufmann in 2013.
Kyle Soucy is the Founding Principal of Usable Interface (www.usableinterface.com), an independent UX consulting company specializing in user research and usability testing. Her industry diverse client list includes Comcast, Hewlett-Packard, Intuit Inc., Scholastic, and TheLadders to name a few. She has spent the last 14 years helping create intuitive interfaces for a variety of different products, ranging from websites to touch screen devices. Kyle founded the New Hampshire Chapter of the User Experience Professionals’ Association.
Samantha Starmer leads customer experience for Razorfish’s omnichannel Commerce practice. Prior to Razorfish, Samantha was Director of Customer Experience at REI. There she was responsible for creating and leading new teams for omnichannel experience strategy, user experience, interaction design, and information architecture. Samantha has over 15 years of experience in leading large, customer-centered programs from strategy through design and execution at companies such as Microsoft and Amazon.
Julia Suvorova, Senior Usability Consultant in UsabilityLab, Russia. Educational background in clinical and engineeging psychology (Specialist in Psychology, MSTTU). Her background is in testing, consulting and prototyping. Currently she workw as a Head consultant on the project of the new design for the website of the Federal Tax Service of Russia. She also gives lectures in Usability and HCI at the State University of Management, RMA Center in Moscow.
Sara Wachter-Boettcher is an independent content strategist, writer, and editor based in Philadelphia. She’s the author of Content Everywhere from Rosenfeld Media; the editor in chief of A List Apart, a magazine about web content, culture, and code; and a contributor to publications like Contents and the Pastry Box Project. When she’s not helping clients design systems for flexible, adaptable content, you’ll find her speaking at conferences like Confab, the Content Strategy Forum, Mobilism, Web Directions, UX Week, and Breaking Development.
Misty Weaver is a content strategist specializing in social media, community management and multi-channel communication for nonprofits and startups. She teaches Content Strategy in Information Architecture at the University of Washington Information School, manages social media channels as Community Manager for Content Insight and leads monthly professional networking events for Information Architects and Content professionals in Seattle, WA. Her areas of expertise include content inventories and audits and content development planning.
Susan Weinschenk has a Ph.D. in Psychology and over 30 years of experience as a behavioral psychologist. Dr. Weinschenk is the author of several books, including How To Get People To Do Stuff, 100 Things Every Presenter Needs To Know About People, 100 Things Every Designer Needs To Know About People, and Neuro Web Design: What makes them click? Susan is the founder of the Weinschenk Institute, LLC. She speaks, teaches, consults and mentors teams on the design of websites, software, apps, TV ads, physical devices, and physical spaces.
